Is there life after Idol rejection? For quirky, quixotic 19-year-old Australian singer/songwriter Lisa Mitchell the answer is an emphatic yes. Three years after getting the boot from the finals of the Down Under version of the popular cringefest, Mitchell delivered one of the most remarkable pop albums of the past year, an unusual, dreamy and surprisingly mature collection of addictive hooks, sunny, unpretentious goofiness and her own left-of-center musical vision. Not many debut albums can sound this fresh, this fun, this child-like and this mature at the same time but the recently released Wonder (outside the U.S. only so far) manages to do all of that and then some. Mitchell was nominated for three Arias (Aussie Grammys) including Best Female Artist and Best Breakthrough Artist - Album. Latest single "Oh Hark!" (video after the jump) is another odds-on, oddball fave.

A sweet tart of a candied treat for the ears, the album's thirteen songs also have the distinctive personal stamp of the artist -- something rare in an era when young artists are usually "managed" into bland replications of the current hip-pop flavor of the month. Take the single (and oddball video) "Coin Laundry", a sing-songy, maddeningly addictive jolt of caffeinated and sugary fluff that also mixes in some twinkling production touches to the "guilty pleasure" quotient (see the video after the jump). You can try to resist, but it's best to just simply surrender. “Songwriting for me is usually trying to create something that will give me proof of hope," says Mitchell, "like a packed lunch for the future or something." For us, the playful, irresistible Wonder gives us that "proof"...so we're still wondering -- why hasn't this album been picked up for the U.S.?

Wonder is the debut album from 19-year-old singer-songwriter Lisa Mitchell. The winner of four ARIA awards (think Australian Grammy) for her 2004 debut, Aussie singer/songwriter Sarah Blasko brings a provocative angle to her third album As Day Follows Night, a summer 2009 release Down Under which is finally seeing light of day stateside August 10. The project began as Blasko began searching for a fresh approach to her elegant, left-of-center pop songs. Leaving the summery surroundings of Sydney behind, she collaborated with Swedish indie-darling and producer Bjorn Yttling (of Peter, Bjorn and John) in a snowbound Stockholm studio. Blasko arrived nursing an emotional break-up at home, an impetus, perhaps, to embrace Yttling's incrementally eccentric musical stylings.

The result is a distinctive album that expands Blasko's usual comfort range -- guitar, piano, voice basics -- with an array of unexpected sonic flourishes, most notably some brittle, occasionally lockstep percussive backing that give the project a cool, almost icy facade. Fortunately, Blasko's warm, slightly airy vocals balance the more dramatic effects, bringing songs like the reverb-heavy, sweetly moody "Is My Baby Yours" and dramatic, spaghetti-western jangle of "All I Want" a welcome personal stamp. Where some albums might be weighted down by the production accessories, As Day Follows Night maintains a light touch -- the result, no doubt, of a confident artist who welcomes the challenge of creating something decidedly different. "All the Lovers" is the scheduled lead single from Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue's eleventh studio album Aphrodite. The track was written with Kish Mauve near the end of the sessions for what would become Aphrodite and produced by Stuart Price. Kish Mauve previously wrote and produced "2 Hearts", the lead single from Minogue's preceding album.

The song will be released to radio on May 14, 2010.

Attention Kylie fans! The Australian pop goddess will premiere her new single ‘All The Lovers‘ tomorrow on BBC Radio 1’s Chris Moyles Show at 8am (UK time).

If ‘Love Love Love’ is to set the tone for the new album, we can expect a more organic sound and natural vocals. A very welcome change for a music scene which has been dominated by autotuned vocals and synthesizers for the past few years.
